Alexandrea Winery Participates in the RIEDEL Glass Selection for Voskehat
On September 23, Alexandrea Winery took part in a special tasting at Aratashen Winery dedicated to selecting the RIEDEL glass best suited to Voskehat, one of Armenia’s most important indigenous white grape varieties.
The event brought together Armenian winemakers, wine professionals, and industry representatives to explore how the shape of a wine glass can influence the expression and perception of a varietal. The tasting was led by Alexander Zorin, RIEDEL’s regional representative and Deputy Head of Sales.
Organized through a collaboration between RIEDEL, Noyan Tapan, and the Vine and Wine Foundation of Armenia, the tasting featured 10 Armenian wines made from Voskehat and six different RIEDEL glass designs. The wines were tasted blind, with participants evaluating how each glass influenced the wines’ aromatic expression, structure, and overall sensory experience.
The tasting included six wines made in a classic style and four aged expressions of Voskehat. Each wine was evaluated across the different glasses, allowing participants to compare how the same variety expressed itself depending on the shape and structure of the glass. Following the tasting and scoring process, Glass No. 5 was selected as the preferred glass for Voskehat, demonstrating the strongest ability to reveal the variety’s aromatic and flavor characteristics.
For Alexandrea Winery, participating in the selection was particularly meaningful. Voskehat is part of Alexandrea’s work with Armenia’s indigenous grape varieties and is grown in our vineyards alongside both local and international varieties. It also forms 35% of Alexandrea White Cuvée, together with 65% Chardonnay.
The initiative represents another important step in presenting Armenia’s indigenous grape varieties within the context of international wine culture. Voskehat now follows Areni, for which a specialized RIEDEL glass was selected in 2018, becoming the second Armenian indigenous grape variety to have its own dedicated RIEDEL glass.
At Alexandrea Winery, we see initiatives like this as an important part of the continued development and recognition of Armenian wine. They create new opportunities to explore the individual character of indigenous varieties and to present them with greater precision both in Armenia and internationally.
